Keele University

Physical Geography with Science Foundation Year

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. The Science Foundation Year provides a scientific background customised to your needs, helping you to progress to the subsequent years of a degree programme at Keele. An extensive choice of modules is available from the life, physical, geographical and environmental sciences; mathematics; computing and psychology. You will take modules related to your intended degree subject. You will study mathematics to a level of AS equivalent and be supported in developing as a student in scientific communications. The year covers the necessary theoretical introduction, together with a highly practical experimental element. During your Physical Geography degree, you will discover new ways to understand and appreciate the natural world as you explore the rapidly evolving science behind Earth’s changing landscapes and environments. This course, ranked top for student satisfaction in the 2015 and 2016 National Student Survey, focuses on Earth as a global environmental system. We take an interdisciplinary perspective that will allow you to embed influences from fields such as geology, environmental science and life sciences into your studies. With our global approach you will discover landscapes and points of view that transcend traditional boundaries. You will learn to collect and interpret evidence in the field and in the laboratory, acquiring skills in surveying, GIS and a range of physical and chemical analytical techniques. You will have the chance to apply your new skills on field courses in the UK and overseas. In 2016, Keele University were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey and Geography graduates are highly employable. Your degree from Keele will equip you for future employment or advanced study, and will establish a lifelong appreciation of the world around you. Your skills could take you into directly related careers such as environmental planning or consultancy, or you could apply them in industries such as energy, agriculture, meteorology or construction. Your problem-solving skills and global, interdisciplinary approach will be of value in a huge range of careers.
