Human Geography and Politics

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Human Geography and Politics. Geography and Politics are both disciplines that enable individuals to provide broad ranging perspectives on a variety of key societal challenges, such as climate change, that will define this generation. With outstanding student satisfaction (NSS, 2017) and no cost options for our overseas field courses. This combination particularly specialises in the relationship between people and the environment and how this is affected by ways in which societies are organised and governed. You will develop a core foundation in the first year while also pursuing your own interests from a diverse range of specialisms and interests. You’ll engage with the latest research; undertake fieldwork; learn to collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data; plan and undertake research; and use specialist software, such as GIS, to analyse problems. The course also offers local and overseas field excursions, access to excellent computing and science lab facilities, and the chance to study abroad at a partner institution. You will develop a wide range of transferable and subject-specific skills that are highly valued by employers. Your interdisciplinary perspectives, problem solving skills and the ability to research, evaluate and synthesise information from diverse sources are relevant to a broad range of careers including those in transport and planning, civil service, the environmental and retail sectors and working for Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the charity and development sectors. As an example, some of our graduates have entered occupations including planning and development surveyor, logistics manager, airport environmental technician, town planner, international development worker, advertising and marketing, youth services, local government transport planner or market researcher. The course also provides an ideal training for postgraduate study.
