History and Politics

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. During the History and Politics programme at Keele, you will study the way humans try to organise their lives in the past and present – physically and conceptually, individually and together. Whether interpreting acts of resistance, assessing economic change, describing environmental behaviour or understanding acts of oppression, an appreciation of the past is essential to understanding where we are today and how we’re attempting to shape the future. Even societies in the very distant past can be highly relevant in this respect, which is why history and politics work very well together as subjects. You will learn the skills of the historian as you deepen your understanding of eras, continents and cultures from political, social and religious perspectives, and you will learn to use that knowledge to analyse the way in which societies govern themselves today. You’ll develop an understanding of different approaches to history and politics, developing a range of methods used in their pursuit. You will take classes with internationally known experts and have a lot of flexibility and choice to specialise in the areas that most interest you. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. The careers record of Keele History and Politics graduates is excellent. Some of the common destinations include political research, think-tanks, journalism, education, management, the civil service, local government and the voluntary sector as well as in the preservation, archival and museum sectors. Around a quarter of our graduates go on to take higher degrees with many choosing to stay at Keele.
