Geoscience with Science Foundation Year

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. The Science Foundation Year provides a scientific background customised to your needs, helping you to progress to the subsequent years of a degree programme at Keele. An extensive choice of modules are available from the life, physical, geographical and environmental sciences; mathematics; computing and psychology. On completion of this degree, you will progress onto the Geoscience degree. Geoscience impacts on most aspects of modern life, with geoscientists needed to explore for future energy, mineral, metal and water resources. The Geoscience single honours degree course extends our core dual honours Geology modules by adding wider, interdisciplinary elements such as geophysics and geochemistry to your degree. In addition to looking at rocks, minerals and fossils, how they were formed, what they can tell us about the history of the Earth and its past environments, as well as investigation of geological processes such as plate tectonics and exploration for geological resources such as oil, gas, metals and minerals, you will also study broader subjects such as geoscience and society, forensic geoscience and Earth systems. There is a strong emphasis on fieldwork and applied problem-solving laboratory classes in the course, with field courses both in the UK and overseas. A pathway through your degree is available where field course transport and accommodation costs are covered by the University. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. Geoscience graduates are needed more than ever as modern society demands increasing amounts of energy, raw materials and other. Furthermore, there is the options to add on an additional master’s level year to our three-year major route Geology (with a science subject) and Geoscience bachelor’s degree programmes, during which there is a strong emphasis on developing the vocational and research skills you will need to work in industry or advance in academia. You will continue to develop your breadth and depth of knowledge in the geosciences, as well as extending your research and data handling skills. resources such as water, the vast majority of which are discovered by geoscientists, and this is likely to continue into the foreseeable future. Geoscientists are also needed for civil engineering in designing foundations and tunnels and in environmental projects such as carbon dioxide sequestration. You could go on to work in the mining, oil and gas, hydrogeology or geotechnical sectors. The single honours Geoscience degree is accredited by the Geological Society of London which can speed your progression towards Chartered Geologist status.
