Film Studies with Creative Writing with Humanities Foundation Year

The Humanities Foundation Year provides preparation for the academic skills required for degree level study in the Humanities subject of your choice. It will enable you to progress to a single or dual honours Humanities degree at Keele in subjects such as American Studies, English, English and American Literature, English with Creative Writing, Film Studies, History, Media, Communications and Culture, Music, Music Technology or Philosophy. In this case, progressing onto an Film Studies and Creative Writing programme, which is an opportunity to explore the fertile connections between audio-visual and literary expression, from screenwriting to prose and poetry. This programme at Keele offers students the chance to develop their creative practice skills alongside the analytical study of screen and literary texts. You will explore the core areas of Film Studies, with Keele’s combined emphasis on local and global film cultures, and its focus on the key concepts and issues in film history and theory. Looking across a range of films and filmmaking contexts, from Classical Hollywood to contemporary transnational cinemas, you will analyse, discuss and debate the cultural significance and creative possibilities of this powerful medium. Alongside this, you will study creative writing in every semester, experimenting with poetry, prose and screenwriting in order to develop your writing skills and to become a mature practitioner. You’ll be taught by a team who are research active and expert in their fields, with a commitment to lively and innovative teaching methods. The module options also allow students to combine their learning and skills in creative filmmaking production; while throughout the course, you will be able to try out your work in a critical but supportive group framework, providing a vital source of feedback and reflection on your own practice. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. Film Studies and Creative Writing is an invaluable training for anyone pursuing creative careers in screen or print media. Beyond this, the degree with also equip you to work independently and collaboratively in a wide range of professions. You will develop key transferable skills, such as creative thinking and communication, developing and revising critical and creative texts, and giving and receiving constructive critique. You will also develop your research, analysis, and critical writing skills, which will make you extremely attractive to a wide range of employers, including those within the different creative and cultural industries which now form a large part of the UK economy.
