Film Studies - Keele University

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. As both a medium of mass entertainment, and a mode of expression, film is a powerful art form. Studying Film at Keele provides insight into its forms, technologies and cultural importance, both historically and now. The Film Studies programme at Keele looks at the medium in local and international contexts, combining a focus on British and other national cinemas with the analysis of an increasingly global film culture. It combines exploration of the history of film as industry, art form and technology, with analysis of its most contemporary trends, including film’s relationship to television. Led by experienced lecturers, the programme at Keele enables students to grasp the significance of film across cultural contexts, its importance as a mode of popular entertainment, and its centrality to expressions of individual, national, transnational, racial and sexual identities. You will also, if you wish, have the opportunity to combine theoretical and historical study with creative filmmaking practice options. A degree in Film Studies can be a starting point for careers in film and television, whether your particular interest is in direction, screenwriting, editing, production or marketing; as well as being a vital foundation for teachers and critics of the medium. Film Studies at Keele can also open up a wide variety of other career options in media and education, as well as publishing, advertising and events management, and a range of other related fields.
