Environmental Studies and Physical Geography

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Environmental Studies and Physical Geography. For the Environmental Studies element of the course, You’ll learn to explore the crucial relationship between humans and the environment, drawing on the humanities and social sciences. Environmental Studies differs from our Environmental Science programme because it focuses on the socio-political nature of environmental problems and the responses to them from individuals, businesses, institutions and civil organisations. You could consider subjects such as sustainable development, environmental policy making, ethical codes of practice and environmental activism and you might do this from perspectives as varied as history, sociology, economics, ethics, human geography, politics, international relations and philosophy. This course is ideal if you’re interested in the way the environment is debated from a broad spectrum of positions. A growing number of careers are open to people who truly understand the many different perspectives on environmental issues. In fact, 1.3 million people are predicted to be working in ‘green’ jobs in the UK by 2017. This course will develop your ability to think critically, and to speak persuasively and knowledgeably, with people who have diverse viewpoints and agendas. You’ll have been well prepared for a choice of rewarding careers; for example, you might work directly in sustainability or in government, for a policy centre, as a journalist or as a campaign. For the Physical Geography element of the course, you will Discover new ways to understand and appreciate the natural world as you explore the rapidly evolving science behind Earth’s changing landscapes and environments. This course, ranked top for student satisfaction in the 2015 and 2016 National Student Survey, focuses on Earth as a global environmental system. We take an interdisciplinary perspective that will allow you to embed influences from fields such as geology, environmental science and life sciences into your studies. With our global approach you will discover landscapes and points of view that transcend traditional boundaries. You will learn to collect and interpret evidence in the field and in the laboratory, acquiring skills in surveying, GIS and a range of physical and chemical analytical techniques. You will have the chance to apply your new skills on field courses in the UK and overseas. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. Geography graduates are highly employable. Your degree from Keele will equip you for future employment or advanced study, and will establish a lifelong appreciation of the world around you.
