At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both Economics and Mathematics. Keele has been delivering courses in economics for over 50 years: this is a well-established, well-respected programme which will prepare you for a range of rewarding careers. In Economics. you’ll learn techniques for addressing real world problems and policy-related issues, and explore the behaviour and performance of households, businesses and governments. In considering issues of social importance and policy relevance, and examining real world phenomena, you’ll combine theoretical analysis with up-to-date knowledge about current issues. You’ll use professional software tools to analyse and interpret real economic data and to confidently present complex findings to a range of audiences. An Economics degree from Keele will open up a range of opportunities in business and government. Graduates might take up careers as economists, perhaps in the City or with the prestigious Government Economic Service. They might work in commerce and industry, in education or in local government. With or without further study, you might go into banking, insurance, accounting, management consultancy, or the NHS, for example. You might work as an investment analyst, statistician or financial adviser. You’ll explore the roles of individual and business consumers in society, and the impact of marketing on the culture of businesses, governments and more. Our teaching is excellent, as evidenced by Mathematics at Keele having been consistently ranked in the top ten in the UK in the National Student Survey. On this course you will explore the beauty, elegance and practicality of pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. You will learn to use maths to develop precise and logical arguments, construct rigorous proofs, and formulate solutions to new problems. You will study in an intellectually stimulating environment amongst mathematicians producing world-leading research. There is an option to take this degree over four years (dependant on subject scheduling), by adding a year abroad studying (in English) at one of our partner institutions – which could be anywhere from Australia to Finland, Japan or the USA. Mathematics helps you to take novel approaches to problem solving and make critical interpretations of data and text; your skills will be in demand wherever there’s a need for logical thinking. An extremely wide range of career paths is open to mathematicians, where high levels of mathematical ability are desirable. This can include fields of work as diverse as finance, data analytics, teaching, engineering, medical statistics and management consultancy.
