Keele University

American Studies and International Business

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We proudly rank 1st for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey for the last three years. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. At Keele, studying a combined honours degree will include some modules from both of the single honours degrees. In this case, your programme will be made up of a combination of modules from both American Studies and International Business. Keele was a pioneer in American Studies in Britain in the 1960s, and this remains one of the leading programmes in the UK devoted to the study of the world’s leading industrial nation. From music to McDonald’s, movies to military engagement, the U.S affects the daily lives of people in every corner of the world. If you want to understand current events and culture, you must understand America. Keele is famous for bringing different disciplines and approaches together to create exciting learning opportunities, and American Studies at Keele exemplifies this. You can examine historical, literary, cinematic, political and geographical perspectives on issues such as slavery, crime, power, imperialism, conflict, security and the presidency, and compare the USA with Great Britain. Combining this with Keele’s multi-disciplinary, internationalised approach to management opens a gateway into the competitive world of global business through international business. This course encourages you to bring a critical and globalised approach to management theory and practice. Since much of modern society was shaped by the Western industrialists of the late 1800s, this course challenges whether 100 year old management concepts should continue to frame an increasingly globalised, politicised world. International Business at Keele takes a critical perspective on what goes on in organisations, offering a thorough exploration of the ‘nuts and bolts’ of essential business skills and knowledge. You’ll enjoy engaging with a range of interconnecting subjects such as law, human resource management, human geography, finance, politics and media. Keele enjoys high rates of graduate employment, where in 2016, were recognised nationally as 1st for employability in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey. You’ll graduate with a wide range of skills to bring to the global employment market, although you might equally go on to study at master’s or PhD level. You’ll have a solid understanding of both business and the global, context, preparing you for a wide range of careers in the public, private and third sectors. With a combined honours degree including international business, you might work in management consultancy, IT, banking, import/export, sales, marketing or logistics, or carry your transferable skills to an indirectly related career of your choice. Students on the American Studies programme have gone on to careers in teaching, journalism, publishing, advertising, law and the arts. You could also go into marketing, research, broadcasting and publishing.
