Accounting and Finance - Keele University

At Keele University, we’re different. Nestled in 600 acres of countryside in the heart of the UK, we have a big campus but a small and cosmopolitan community. We’re proud to be ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017, in addition to having been ranked No.1 in the National Student Survey 2014-2016. This is because it’s more than green and lovely, it’s a place of research and academic excellence too. This course allows you to put theory into practice. Our computer laboratories are equipped with Bloomberg terminals and Sage accounting software, enabling you to interact with real-world data and situations. You can build on this experience by choosing a placement year between years two and three of your studies. Our programme is recognised by global professional accountancy bodies and it offers a number of important exemptions from their professional exams. You will study accountancy with a specialism in finance, exploring the design and use of accounting and financial systems and how they are affected by individuals, organisations, markets and society. Finance modules are designed to help you better understand the theories leading to the design of financial institutions, the services they provide and the products they sell. You will examine optimal portfolio creation and management, project appraisals and financing and risk management through the use of such derivatives as options, futures and swaps. Drawing on economics, law, management, mathematics, statistics and IT, you will build your understanding of business strategy, behaviour and performance in a global context. A high percentage of business leaders have finance backgrounds, and our course has a strong employment rate. With the increasing internationalisation of business and capital markets, you will have extensive opportunities. You might work as a chartered accountant, chartered certified accountant, chartered public finance accountant or chartered management accountant. Alternatively, you might work as a commodities trader, stockbroker, management consultant, banker, financial or tax advisor, insurance broker, or go on to study at master’s or PhD level.
