Food Bioscience

This is the only IFST-approved Food Bioscience programme in Scotland; it satisfies the educational requirements for membership of the Institute of Food Science and Technology. It is also approved by the Royal Environment Health Institute for Scotland (REHIS) to meet the pre-registration academic standard for the Scottish Food Safety Officers’ Registration Board. We are the only institution in Scotland to offer this type of programme and have the strongest emphasis of any Scottish university on food and its development. You’ll learn about food composition, the effect of chemicals and additives on consumers and food safety as well as genetics, biochemistry, microbiology and nutrition, combined with key industry skills and an understanding of food legislation. There’s a large practical component to complement the theory and an opportunity for a placement. This may comprise food processing, nutrition, clinical and non-clinical laboratory work or food research and development. Students are often offered jobs by their placement company, even before graduating
