English Literature with Spanish - De Montfort University

Our Languages pathway allows you to study Spanish alongside English Language. Ideal for students who dropped languages at school after year nine or GCSEs, and for those who have no background in languages, the pathway offers you an essential skill for success in the global job market. Each year you will take 30 credits of your chosen language, divided into two 15 credit modules. This equates to three hours of language study each week, including one hour which focuses on the country, as well as the people and culture. English at DMU introduces you to an exciting range of literature in English, including writing from Britain, America and around the globe. You will learn how texts work and debate literature’s role in society now and through history, while acquiring the skills to articulate your ideas with confidence and write with fluency and flair. You will receive excellent teaching from internationally-renowned academics who are friendly, supportive and passionate about literature, with the opportunity to attend talks by visiting writers such as Carol Ann Duffy and Benjamin Zephaniah. • **Boost your career prospects** There is a shortage of foreign language skills among native English speakers so proficiency in a foreign language will distinguish you from other English graduates and make you more employable • **Dynamic and diverse curriculum** Learn a foreign language while reading poetry, fiction and drama in English from different centuries and different continents with the flexibility to specialise in your areas of interest • **Study text and film** Choose options drawing on expertise from DMU’s Centre for Adaptation Studies, an area of study that incorporates English and Film Studies and is available in Years Two and Three for English with Language students at DMU • **Study creative writing and English language** Choose options which allow you to study creative writing or English language modules during all three years of your degree. • **Explore print and digital media** Learn to use a hand printing press or gain practical training in HTML with options exploring the production of literary texts in manuscript, print and digital forms from DMU’s Centre for Textual Studies • **Gain workplace skills and experience** Put your research, reasoning and communication skills into practice with an English-related placement module or extra-curricular internship during your degree • **International opportunities** through #DMUglobal where you will have the opportunity for a meaningful international experience
