As a BA (Hons) Public Sector Management student at York College, you will be taught the skills and practices needed to work in all areas of the public sector, giving you the expertise and knowledge you require to become a highly effective manager. You will study the political and governmental influence affecting the public sector, for careers in the National Health Service, the education sector, uniformed public services such as the police or Armed Forces and the voluntary sector. This will include studying the crucial issues in management such as leadership, strategic human resource management and marketing management, giving you a full understanding of the key organisational functions and management contexts within business organisations. The flexibility of the course allows you to undertake academic research into a public sector context of your choice, through a suite of modules that allows for the development of critical thinking skills as well as higher level academic practices. It will provide you with interdisciplinary knowledge of management theory and strategy, allowing you to consider problem solving and decision making approaches in a variety of public sector contexts. You will study a specialist unit relevant to decision making in either a business or public sector context and will go on to produce a dissertation relevant to your chosen sector, allowing you to fully investigate the application of management policies and practices and to resolve problems and achieve strategic goals.
The tutors in the department have close links with industry sectors such as the police, the army, governmental services and human resources management which will enhance your academic experience through industry expertise. Students on the management programme typically come from a wide variety of working backgrounds and so you will benefit from a vast pool of experience and form valuable new contacts.
A range of assessment methods are used including written assignments, research tasks and self-analysis, reflective accounts, oral presentations, case studies and an examination. We encourage all of our students to support each other and share perspectives and learn from the contributions of others.
On completion of the BA (Hons) in Public Sector Management, you will have a full range of academic and transferrable skills to equip you for either postgraduate study or success within a management role within the public sector. Previous students have gone on to work in areas within the police, teaching, for the civil service or within the prison service.
