Law - Coventry University

This programme is aimed at a wide variety of students within a broad market, but specifically law graduates, legal practitioners from the UK and other jurisdictions, and international studies and politics graduates with some knowledge of law. As technology brings us closer together, organisations of all sizes have people working internationally and remotely across different time-zones. Global law firms and businesses are looking for individuals with the ability to work across different cultures. One major advantage of our LLM is the international dimension to postgraduate legal study and the wide range of contemporary modules offered, in exciting topics such as international diplomatic relations, corporate governance or environmental law. The Law School benefits from extensive links in Western and Eastern Europe, the United States of America, Asia and, more recently, the Commonwealth Caribbean. These close relationships, particularly with the South West University of Politics and Law (SWUPL) in China, provide you with the opportunity to gain an international experience, both through the content of your course and by applying to spend a year studying abroad, with many courses now taught in English. Many of our staff are research-active in areas including: human rights law, European and international law, legal education, property law, public law, prisoners’ rights, criminal law and the criminal justice system, particularly the law of homicide. There will be opportunities to attend regular seminars from our staff and postgraduate students, which have recently covered, for example, intellectual property practice in the 21st century and restorative justice as the future for our court system. The School also produces its own in-house journal, the Coventry Law Journal, published twice a year, which contains contributions from staff and students both here at Coventry and from staff at other institutions. Key course benefits; - High levels of student satisfaction of 93% overall, above the sector average of 84%, in the Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) 2016. - Guidance on research, study and writing skills together with research design and methods, in preparation for writing assessments and dissertation. - International perspective provided by staff exchange visits from other universities in the USA, such as the University of Maryland, who in the past have lectured on International Civil Rights Law. - Annual Law Student Conference, which was run in collaboration the British Foundation for the University of the West Indies (BFUWI) and was attended by over 120 students at its launch in 2015 with the theme of ‘Global Careers in Law’. - Opportunities to attend guest lectures from employers who specialise in different areas of the law, building your professional network. Recent speakers have included the Vice President and Chief Accountability Officer at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, USA, and a solicitor and legal skills research and study coach at the University of London. - Established student exchange links with the Universities of Liege in Belgium, Strasbourg in France (French speaking), Castellon and Leon in Spain (Spanish speaking), The Hague in the Netherlands, Orebro in Sweden, Pecs in Hungary (where courses are taught in English), the Universities of Kiel and Rostock in Germany (German Speaking) and the University of the West Indies Law Faculty in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (English speaking).
