Fine Art and Illustration - Coventry University

Taught by highly acclaimed artists and practitioners, our course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to art and illustrative practice, grounded in historical context, yet inspired by contemporary trends; it is designed to empower you to produce personal and expressive portfolios that demonstrate the highest standards of creative agility and technical prowess. You will have the chance to gain a strong foundation in material processes, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video and digital media, at all times emphasising your developing individual creativity. Through a rich and varied experience of in-house assignments, self-initiated tasks, national or international competitions, ‘live’ project or concept visualisation briefs, installations and exhibitions, you will have the opportunity to sample elements of professional practice, such as interpreting and responding to briefs, scheduling, working to deadline, presenting ideas, budgeting and meeting the expectations of clients and contractors. Coventry University has a long and distinguished history of studio-based delivery; you will have access to industry-standard software, workshops and studio environments. Typical graduate portfolios might include digital imagery, drawing, painting, printmaking, performance, photography, collage and 3D sculpture. We aim to help prepare you for graduation and the world of work, from the outset you will have the chance to develop the professional skills associated with evaluating, exhibiting and distributing your work, which will become more visible to the outside world as the course progresses and your confidence grows. You will be able to first share work in a ‘safe’ environment, making use of the two formal gallery spaces within the University, later having opportunities to showcase your work, culminating with the final public degree show. We have strong links with many regional arts organisations, for example, the Mead Gallery at the Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry Art space, Coventry Collective//Pod, the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum and the Earlsdon Festival. Our commercial partners include Warwickshire NHS Trust, the Coventry Building Society and Severn Trent Water, which runs an environmentally-themed annual student art commission with the chance for six students to display their work in the company’s state-of-the art Operations Centre in Coventry. Our acclaimed FACETS talks provide an opportunity to hear direct from some of the most innovative contemporary artists and creative practitioners from the UK and beyond – recent topics have explored current changes in cultural opportunities across Eastern and Western Europe, post-object art practices in the context of digital media and the impact that artists can have on their environments.
