Business Law

If you are looking to apply the law in a commercial or business setting, the LLB Business Law will help to equip you with a specialist understanding of both the law as it applies to business and the wider commercial world. Accredited by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and Bar Standards Board, it could set you on the path towards qualifying as a solicitor or barrister, but equally can act as preliminary training for a range of other careers, recognised by employers as providing the transferrable professional skills they demand. With a focus on developing your practical legal skills, Law has been taught at Coventry University for 50 years. Whether it is participating in a scenario to advise a client on setting up a company or preparing a complex international business contract, we aim to improve your analytical, negotiation and communication skills, vital for any line of work. All qualifying law degrees are required to cover the foundations of legal knowledge, which will be studied during the first two years. These subjects are Contract Law, Tort Law, Criminal Law, Law of the European Union, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Property Law, and Equity and Trusts, as well as the English Legal System. On this specialist degree, the curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework that businesses operate within, together with the rules and main institutions of the legal system. You can also choose optional modules in specialist business law topics such as intellectual property or employment law. You should gain an appreciation of the wider commercial context in which businesses operate and the legal consequences of various business activities – from initial set up as sole trader, partnership or registered company, for example, to tort liability for defective goods or premises. We will examine aspects of contract law, agency and sale of goods as they affect business activities. Critically important in any organisation, we will also study basic elements of employment law, such as the contract of employment, health and safety at work, as well as the rights at work and protection against dismissal and redundancy. Students on our LLB courses are required to undertake topics specifically designed to enhance their academic, personal and professional skills, as well as their career management. Modules are designed to develop your skills in areas such as writing, researching and retrieving legal materials, the collation and prioritisation of up-to-date relevant information, using paper and electronic sources, primary and secondary legal sources, and legal journals. You will be required to look at the development of a contemporary legal issue in the news, reporting your findings.
