Mechanical Engineering is the most established subject area at Brunel. It is one of very few in the UK that provides broad education in mechanical, energy, aeronautics, building services and automotive/motorsport engineering. Our annual Brunel Engineers event offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your final-year work to fellow students and industry representatives. This exciting celebration brings together the creative minds of our final-year students to showcase projects ranging from nano and micro engineering to larger scale aviation projects. Our dynamic student Brunel Racing TT Team enter the TT zero electric motorcycle race on the Isle of Man and our Brunel Racing FS team compete in the Formula Student competitions every year. Wherever your interests lie, we are confident that you’ll find the course that is right for you at Brunel. All our courses are offered as BEng or MEng programmes. If you join us on the BEng you can transfer to the MEng programme at the end of the second year, provided you reach a certain progression standard. The final year of the MEng will broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of the discipline to prepare you for the leadership needs of industry. You can choose the full-time route or include a year’s placement by opting to go on a high-quality work placement usually between Levels 2 and 3. You’ll gain experience and academic credit and develop the competencies valued by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, fast-tracking you towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status. Mechanical engineers deal with the design and production of the machines, systems and structures that are everywhere in the modern world. Our mechanical engineering courses meet the needs of industry and reflect our world-class research interests, in particular in energy and environmental engineering; internal combustion engines and their fuels; and materials and manufacturing. We offer a broad-based general degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as three courses that allow you to specialise in the third year in the area that interests you. All our Mechanical Engineering courses are taught together in the first and second years. You’ll learn through lectures, laboratory sessions, design studio workshops and one-to-one supervision. You’ll produce assignments, project work, reports on laboratory practicals, oral presentations and take short tests and examinations. Our Level 1 project is a design-based competition between teams of students from different subjects, enabling you to learn from each other and collaborate as you would in the working world. Our mainstream Mechanical Engineering course gives you a solid grounding in the subject as it covers all the fundamental elements of mechanical engineering and design. The specialisms in this respected general degree include sustainability and mechatronics, which can be applied across the manufacturing sector or in more specialist areas such as biomedical engineering. We have a reputation for developing graduates of the highest calibre, ready to meet the challenges of employment. Our students often have job offers before they graduate. Our graduates go on to work in exciting industrial, commercial and public sector areas including aviation, automotive design, building services, energy and environmental engineering, gas and water supply, oil production, mining and mineral processing, nuclear power, patent engineering, banking, the armed forces and the railways.
