Mechanical and Energy Engineering with Professional Development

Mechanical Engineering is the most established subject area at Brunel. It is one of very few in the UK that provides broad education in mechanical, energy, aeronautics, building services and automotive/motorsport engineering. Our annual Brunel Engineers event offers you the opportunity to demonstrate your final-year work to fellow students and industry representatives. This exciting celebration brings together the creative minds of our final-year students to showcase projects ranging from nano and micro engineering to larger scale aviation projects. Our dynamic student Brunel Racing TT Team enter the TT zero electric motorcycle race on the Isle of Man and our Brunel Racing FS team compete in the Formula Student competitions every year. Wherever your interests lie, we are confident that you’ll find the course that is right for you at Brunel. All our courses are offered as BEng or MEng programmes. If you join us on the BEng you can transfer to the MEng programme at the end of the second year, provided you reach a certain progression standard. The final year of the MEng will broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of the discipline to prepare you for the leadership needs of industry. You can choose the full-time route or include a year’s placement by opting to go on a high-quality work placement usually between Levels 2 and 3. You’ll gain experience and academic credit and develop the competencies valued by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, fast-tracking you towards Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status. Brunel’s on-campus Professional Development Centre can help you find the placement that is right for you. Mechanical and Energy Engineering is a forward-thinking course focusing on the principles underlying the generation, delivery and utilisation of energy. You’ll acquire the knowledge and skills to design modern-day conventional (coal, oil and gas) and new/renewable (solar, wind, biomass and non-conventional fossils) energy plants and components. The modules reflect some of our highlyrespected research interests. These include energy and environmental engineering, materials and manufacturing, and internal combustion engines and their fuels. At Brunel, sustainability is one of our core values. The campus infrastructure, facilities and activities are managed, developed and monitored in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. This includes the conservation and enhancement of our natural resources, and prevention of environmental pollution to continually improve our environmental performance. Our BEng and MEng courses share a common first two years. You’ll learn through lectures and seminars, laboratory practicals, field work, self-study, individual research reports, design studios and one-to-one supervision. There are written examinations in May. In Level 3, you’ll undertake a major individual project, often with industrial support. You’ll leave Brunel an informed engineer ready to contribute to decision-making in this dynamic, crucial and sometimes controversial area. Opt for a sandwich course and you’ll undertake a high-quality, paid industrial placement. Our students have worked in top companies such as ARUP, BISOL Solar, BP, British Gas, Centrica, EDF Energy, E.ON, GE Energy, Hoare Lea, RES, Rolls-Royce and Sharp Solar. Employment opportunities exist worldwide as private and public sectors invest billions in developing the energy sector of the 21st century. Our graduates are ideally placed to develop a rewarding career in this growing field.
