Flood and Coastal Engineering

Flooding affects millions worldwide. As a global issue that is strongly influenced by a changing climate, flood engineering offers an exciting and fulfilling career that combines engineering knowledge and skill with managing significant environmental impacts. This course offers a minimum of 20 sponsored places, covering university tuition fees and a training allowance whilst on placement. The FdSc is a two year, full time programme that will equip you with the essential skills, knowledge and understanding for a successful career in flood risk management. It is equivalent to Level 1 + 2 of a BSc which allows you to obtain Engineering Technician status upon degree completion. Key features include: • an innovative, industry-led academic programme; • at least 20 sponsored places available, covering the full university tuition fees • two, paid, six-month placements at a £1,000 per month (HMRC tax and NI exempt), in the Environment Agency or local authority flood teams, applying your academic knowledge and develop your career • a professional development programme complimenting the academic teaching, to support your rise to Engineering Technician, and onwards to Chartered Engineer • summer school at the degree partner, HR Wallingford • ability to apply for roles in local authorities and Environment Agency in year 2, and to continue into your final BSc year part-time whilst working, with financial support for fees • accredited by the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, CIWEM. The FdSc provides the academic qualification to support Engineering Technician status and is equivalent to Level 1 + 2 of a BSc. Successful completion of the FdSc leads to the Level 3 BSc (Top Up) degree programme. Years 1 and 2 of the FdSc in Flood and Coastal Engineering follow the same structure. You’ll spend the first six months at Brunel followed by six months on a work based training placement.The placement will be with the sponsor and you’ll receive a training allowance of £1,000 per month. You will be asked to indicate your preferred placement locations. Students who don’t obtain sponsorship by the Environment Agency will obtain placements in industry related organisations and companies. The summer school at HR Wallingford occurs midway through the first placement, and gives the students the opportunity to work in world-class flood engineering facilities on a residential week, and apply knowledge gained in the academic programme. After successfully completing the FdSc, you can progress immediately to the Flood and Coastal Engineering BSc top-up (Level 3) to gain your honours degree and support the academic status for Incorporated Engineer. Alternatively, you can gain some industry experience first and take the BSc top-up at a later time. The BSc is available as a two-year, part-time; or one-year, full-time programme. Once you’ve completed the BSc, you can progress to the Flood and Coastal Engineering MSc to gain the educational basis for Chartered Engineer status. We place a very strong emphasis on employability and preparing students to be ready for work. The key advantage of the FdSc academic qualification is that students can become professionally qualified as an Engineering Technician during their undergraduate programme, at the end of Year 2, supporting their progression into the workplace. As the sponsor of the programme, the Environment Agency aims to secure a continual intake of high-calibre graduates from this programme to become the flood engineers of the future, as well as other flood risk management authorities, and civil engineering companies. Roles for Flood and Coastal Engineering graduates include: building flood models to assess flood risk; developing and building flood protection schemes; maintaining and enhancing rivers and natural landforms; providing expert advice about coastal, river and surface water flood risk; delivering a 24/7 incident response service.
