Birkbeck is different: classes are in the evening, so you can work, study, volunteer, intern or do your own thing during the day. We know the 'standard' university model isn't right for everyone, so our unique evening teaching gives people who care about their future the opportunity to study at one of the world's top research-intensive universities and move forward with their life goals at the same time. We've been helping people access higher education and get back into studying for nearly 200 years, so you'll find a famously friendly and supportive learning environment. Our new Foundation Year programmes provide the best possible preparation for degree-level study at Birkbeck. They are ideal if you do not meet the entry requirements for the undergraduate degree you would like to study, if you feel you are not quite ready for an undergraduate degree, or if you are returning to study and need extra help and support. Whatever your background and circumstances, Birkbeck's Foundation Year degrees will prepare you for success. This programme will build your confidence and give you the core knowledge and key skills you need to succeed at university. You will also get a taste of the subject area you are interested in and deepen your understanding of the career potential of your chosen subject. This BSc Social Sciences with Foundation Year will introduce you to the main academic ideas, theories and issues within the social sciences and help you understand, analyse and write about contemporary debates. You will receive intensive support to develop the skills and knowledge required to undertake undergraduate studies. Upon successful completion of the one-year Foundation Year, you can automatically progress on to a wide range of three-year full-time evening study undergraduate programmes in archaeology, history, geography, politics, psychosocial studies and social sciences. You need only complete one application and you enrol onto one programme.
