Intercultural Communication and/with Language with Foundation Year - Birkbeck, University of London

This programme allows you to study intercultural communication while at the same time improving your fluency in a foreign language. You can choose between French, German, Italian, Japanese or Spanish and, for most of our languages, you can start the programme at the level of language learning that suits you. Not only will you attain a good level of competence in the language, you will also have a chance to learn about the culture of the language-speaking area, choosing from a range of modules covering literature, film, history, visual culture and philosophy, amongst other cultural fields. For the intercultural communication component you will learn about how communication practices differ across cultures and you will also be introduced to communication practices in various international and work-related contexts. You will have the option of focusing either on professional communication or on the mechanics of language structure and use. Upon successful completion of the Foundation Year, you can automatically progress on to our three-year, full-time evening study BA Intercultural Communication and/with Language. **HIGHLIGHTS** - Our Foundation Year programmes will fully prepare you for undergraduate study and are ideal if you returning to study after a gap, or if you have not previously studied the relevant subjects, or if you didn't achieve the grades you need for a place on your chosen undergraduate degree. - Arts and humanities at Birkbeck are ranked fifth best in London, 18th in the UK and 87th globally in the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject. - Our Department of Applied Linguistics and Communication is the oldest applied linguists department in the country, celebrating its 54th anniversary in 2019. Our affiliated research centres, Birkbeck Research in Aesthetics of Kinship and Community (BRAKC) and the Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies (CILAVS), provide an important platform for this exchange.
