History (Heritage and Public History)

History (Heritage & Public History) at Bath Spa University is a course which has a focus on the ways in which the past is used in the public realm, whether through decisions about the preservation of historic sites and monuments, the packaging of the past for film or TV, or its role in contemporary political debate. Heritage is a complex, deeply contentious subject, which takes from the challenges of mass tourism to the impact of war, from the complexities of managing a historic site to the careful conservation of a single object. The Heritage and Public History pathway offers you a solid grounding in historical skills, but extends them to encompass the analysis of places, objects, and buildings. You’ll consider: - How we turn ‘history’ into ‘heritage’ - How cultural heritage has become such an important focus for study and debate - Who we think we are and how we negotiate our way through a complex world.
