Art and Design History

Located in a specialist art and design community, this course offers students the opportunity to study the rich histories of art and design attitudes, materials and practices, in a uniquely creative environment. Students will develop a solid understanding of the issues and disciplinary evolution of art and design practices within Western culture. They will also examine the histories of creative practices from outside of European and North American, and how these continue to shape attitudes in contemporary art and design. Through engagements with our own design collection, partner institutions and collaborations with students studying on practice-based degrees, students will hone their critical and analytical skills in relation to specific artefacts, exhibitions and ‘live’ experiences. Students will develop intellectual tools for independent critical and historical work using well-understood methods of image and object analysis, as well as contemporary ethnographic approaches, which take account of the cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts in which specific artefacts are produced. Throughout this programme students will develop the requisite skills for a range of professional careers including art sales, communications and PR, gallery education, art or design journalism, criticism, curation, or working as an archivist, gallerist (or gallery manager), art or design conservator, publications editor. The programme will also prepare students for further study, which may lead to careers in academia, such as university lecturer, or researcher.
