Smart Computing

Today’s digital world is becoming smarter; cities are acting more like living organisms in their interconnectivity and response to occupants’ needs. The “Smart” directive is already very much a part of our future, and subsequently has been adopted by many governments, authorities and organisations. This paradigm shift has led to a notable change in the demand for young professionals to accommodate the rapid market requirements. Our course will ensure you have the relevant digital and technical skillset that employers are looking for to grow their business or you can become an entrepreneur and use your expertise to start up your own business. If you choose to take our four year course with a Sandwich Placement year in industry, you’ll gain invaluable work experience to help you kick-start your career. You’ll learn, develop and expand your knowledge of the ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT), big data mining, analytics and visualisation, artificial intelligence, mobile and wearable technology as well as app development. A Smart System is constituted based on the interaction, communication, connectivity and interoperability of these terms and can be applied on a small scale (individual), or can expand to a ‘Smart Home’ or a ‘Smart City’ scale. These concepts and techniques will be considered throughout the course so you have a thorough knowledge of up-to-date technologies and know how to use them. In addition to the development of technical skills, you’ll learn transferable skills which are essential in any sector. You’ll become a confident communicator, able to work well independently and in a team; develop creative, flexible approaches to problem solving; and the ability to put them into practice. You’ll learn to do this safely and ethically, aware of the political, social and cultural contexts in which you’re working. Our computer architecture labs include an isolated network, so you experiment safely with the configuration of network devices. Meanwhile, our software applications labs offer Apple Mac Pros with dual-boot into Windows or Mac OS X. From there, you’ll have access to applications including CAD, databases and web software. We also have a virtual network environment, so you can access our networking devices whenever you like.
