About Airlangga University

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) is one of the best and one of the oldest universities in Indonesia.  It was established in 1954 by the First President of the Republic of Indonesia, Ir. Soekarno. The university was named after a great king ruling East Java in 1019 known as Prabu Airlangga.

The Coat of Arms of Universitas Airlangga is the mythical bird Garuda ("Garudamukha") — the magical bird of Lord Vishnu depicted carrying an urn containing the eternal water "Amrta". It represents Universitas Airlangga’s spirit to devote itself to knowledge and civilization.

Facing many global challenges, Universitas Airlangga encourages the students to be more exposed to the international environment by inviting more international students to participate in programs that are designed for academic and cultural purposes. Some of the programs are AMERTA (Academic Mobility Exchange for Undergraduate at Airlangga), CERIA (Community Empowerment program at Airlangga), AIRVENTURE Summer Program, Indonesian Heritage program, Summer in SURA-BALI, INDIAIR and many other tailor-made programs. The last for weeks or months depending on the program.

Our research is focused on pre-designed integrated roadmap for health science, life science and social science to achieve the expected research excellence. Our prominent researches are in the field of stem cell, tropical diseases, pharmacy and also social sciences.

Universitas Airlangga excels at life sciences education, research and education. The origin of its Faculty of Medicine was established even before the Independence of Indonesia. The medical school was established as Nederlandsch Indische Artsen School (NIAS) in 1913. Doctors of Universitas Airlangga have been able to be solutions to various health problems in Indonesia. Most of the doctors devoting their lives to provide healthcare services in Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, the biggest referral hospital in East Java, are graduated from Faculty of Medicine UNAIR.
