Modern German Studies

This interdisciplinary four year Bachelor of Arts honours degree in Modern German Studies includes German language, linguistics, modern literature, film, history, politics and cultural studies. It will appeal to students who wish to acquire a high level of competence in the German language but also a well-rounded understanding of the German-speaking countries. If you are interested in modern German and the German-speaking world this is the degree for you. With over 90 million speakers, is the language of the greatest economic power in Europe. Language skills are important for the UK’s economic, political and strategic interests and languages graduates are in demand by employers. This course is open students who would like to commence studying German as well as those who are at advanced level. Beginners’-level students will follow an intensive course in the first year including guided and independent work in the Language Resource Centre. You will gain a high level of linguistic competence and a solid knowledge of the culture within which the language you are studying is used. You will excel with the four hours of intensive language classes per week: most universities only offer two or three. These classes will focus on the four key areas of linguistic development (written, aural, oral, translation). You will benefit from learning in a Department that enriches its students’ learning through innovative and world-leading research.You will be taught by native speakers and experts in the languages of the department. You will have the opportunity to develop your linguistic competencies further and explore the diverse cultural heritage of German. We are an exceptionally friendly department, and our students benefit from the close contact with teaching staff. Employability is embedded across our teaching within the Department of Modern Languages. The Year Abroad is where our graduates are more distinguished than others. On successful completion of the Year Abroad, students return with an increased skill set, stronger language competencies and the ability to adapt in any situations.
