Our degree in Criminology with Applied Psychology focuses on the fundamental aspects of Criminology, but places special emphasis on the psychological approaches to understanding human behaviour. The degree addresses crime causation and the impact of crime on individuals, communities and societies, and explores psychological explanations of criminal behaviour and the management of offenders. Modules in criminology research methods will also provide you with key technical and analytical skills necessary to engage in contemporary debates surrounding policies and practices designed to prevent crime. On completion of your degree, you will possess a repertoire of skills essential for pursuing a professional career in areas such as policing, prisons and youth justice. You will study within a University that is ranked top 4 in the UK and 1st in Wales for student satisfaction (NSS, 2016), and 100% of undergraduates who graduated from the Aberystwyth Law School in 2015 were in employment or further education six months after graduating (DLHE 2015). On completion of your degree you will be in a strong position as potential candidate for: Police and Prison Services, National Probation Services, UK Boarder Agency, Intelligence Analyst for the Security. During your time with us you will have the opportunity to get the job experience within the institutions such as County Council, and NHS Wales as a part of your third year module ‘Employability Skills for Professionals, which is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the industry sector and network with the potential future employers. You will have an opportunity to undertake a work placement or internship through the AberForward scheme, which is a paid internship within Aberystwyth University. As well as take a Year in Employment (YES) placement, which is a yearlong payed internship within the external industries between your second and third year. We have a dedicated team within the Career Department to advice, and help you during both your application period and during your placement.
