York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there’s never been a more exciting time to join us.

Significant investment in our campus and facilities, the development of forward-thinking new partnerships and an enhanced range of contemporary courses have helped make us the fastest growing University in the U.K over the past two years.

Now we’re building on that achievement, developing a new Strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world and a more prosperous region.

We’re putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our Academic expertise as our greatest asset and investing in enabling those expertise to thrive.

As a Stonewall Top 100 employer and holder the Social Enterprise Gold Mark for Responsible Business Practice, our strength lies in the supportive, inclusive network that exists within our team: renowned for our friendly, progressive environment, we will nurture your potential so that you can accomplish your ambitions.

All of this takes place at the heart of beautiful York, recently named by the Sunday Times as the best U.K. city to grow up in because of the quality of education, culture and community spirit that we form part of!

As part of our expansion we are recruiting for a Lecturer in Creative Writing. You will join colleagues in the newly-established York Centre for Writing, a hub for creative research and writing in the North of England, and contribute to a thriving research and teaching community.

You will be a published writer with a strong profile and/or hold a PhD. You will have experience of teaching in Higher Education and will be required to teach flexibly across a variety of genres and forms on undergraduate Creative Writing modules, as well as contributing to our highly successful MA in Creative Writing. You will provide students at all levels with practical skills, inspiration and guidance, as well as helping to shape their understanding of the intellectual and literary traditions in which they are working. You will also contribute to our dynamic literary community, as well as our literature events series and annual publications. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who have experience of devising successful research projects, funding bids and collaborations, as well as those with a background in experimental writing and/or scriptwriting.

If you would like to shape the story of a 175-year-old institution with a fantastic future, we would love to hear from you.

Any informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Naomi Booth, N.Booth@yorksj.ac.uk, Subject Director for Creative Writing.

In addition to a competitive salary and the opportunity to work at our beautiful campus in the heart of York, YSJ employees enjoy access to a superb range of benefits including –

  • Generous annual leave entitlement (plus additional leave days during our Christmas closure period)
  • Pension scheme
  • Health cash plan
  • Training and development
  • Discounts at a wide range of high street brands and local companies, including shops, cinemas and gyms.

Please note that CVs will not be accepted in place of the application form.

We welcome all applicants and particularly people from minority ethnic backgrounds as they are underrepresented within the university.

Closing date – 13th May 2018 at midnight

Provisional interview date – 1st June 2018

We value diversity and wish to promote equality at all levels
