The Role

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us. Significant investment in our campus and facilities, the development of forward-thinking new partnerships and an enhanced range of contemporary courses have helped make us the fastest growing University in the U.K. over the past two years.

Now we are building on that achievement, developing a new Strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset and investing in enabling this expertise to thrive.

As a Stonewall Top 100 employer and holder of the Social Enterprise Gold Mark for Responsible Business Practice, our strength lies in the supportive, inclusive network that exists within our team: renowned for our friendly, progressive environment, we will nurture your potential so that you can accomplish your ambitions. All of this takes place at the heart of beautiful York, recently named by the Sunday Times as the best U.K. city to grow up in because of the quality of education, culture and community spirit that we form part of!

The School of Humanities, Religion and Philosophy is seeking to appoint a part-time postdoctoral Research Assistant into a project role, funded until August 2020.

The post is part-time: 11 hours per week for the first year and 7.5 hours per week for the second year (working hours to be agreed with the successful candidate)

(Equivalent to 0.3FTE for the first year and 0.2FTE for the second year, both at grade 6.)

The successful candidate will work alongside Dr Esther McIntosh on all aspects of the two-year project ‘Supporting Trans and Non-Binary Staff and Students in Higher Education: Shaping Best Practice in Anglican Foundation Universities’ funded by the Church Universities Fund. Principle activities will include recruiting trans-Priests, chaplains, university staff and students to the project; constructing and collating questionnaires; conducting interviews and analysing responses; planning and assisting with dissemination events and the publication of recommendations.

This post offers an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to develop research skills and an understanding of the concerns of trans and non-binary staff and students in Higher Education.

Applicants should have a PhD or be near completion of a PhD in the Humanities or Social Sciences, as well as a keen interest in issues of identity and an awareness of related faith-based concerns. Experience of participant recruitment, interviewing, research ethics, data storage and data analysis is desirable. The successful candidate must be able to work flexibly and independently and build effective working relationships. The post-holder will need to be highly organised, have good time management skills, and have excellent written and oral communication.

Although the post is based in York St John University, the role will require travel to visit other Anglican Foundation Universities and participants in the project.

If you would like to shape the story of a 175 year old institution with a fantastic future, we would love to hear from you.

Any informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Esther McIntosh at e.mcintosh@yorksj.ac.uk.

In addition to a competitive salary and the opportunity to work at our beautiful campus in the heart of York, YSJ employees enjoy access to a superb range of benefits including –
