Lecture and Associate Professor Positions

Department of Biological Sciences

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University

Applications are invited for a position in the Department of Biological Sciences at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. The Department specialises in the molecular biosciences and currently has 17 academic staff and over 200 students.

The successful applicant will have a PhD degree and should demonstrate appropriate teaching experience and evidence of the ability to produce high quality research publications. Candidates for the position of Associate Professor should also have a strong track record in teaching and academic supervision, as well as an international research profile in their fields and a successful record of research funding.  Research in the Department of Biological Sciences focuses on molecular bioscience with relevance to the biomedical, agricultural and environmental arenas. Currently, the department has expertise in bioinformatics, cancer biology, cell signalling, molecular microbiology, neuroscience, proteomics and structural biology.  Application from candidates with teaching and research interests complementary to existing research strength in the department is particularly welcome.

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK (University of Liverpool) and Chinese (Ministry of Education) accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The University now has over 10,000 students on campus. The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.

The Department of Biological Sciences focuses on molecular bioscience and has recruited faculty from globally distinguished institutions working in this discipline. Although relatively young, the Department is already establishing a solid reputation, as indicated by the growing number of grant awards to its staff (e.g. from the National Natural Science Foundation of China) and national and international research collaborations (e.g. with Novartis and Unilever plc). It has state-of-the-art instrumentation housed in custom-built labs, and with excellent technical support. Staff also benefit from the fact that Suzhou is a biotechnology and biomedical science ‘hot-spot’ – Cold Spring Harbor Asia (http://www.csh-asia.org/index.html) is located within walking distance and there is a major concentration of biotechnology companies in BioBay (http://en.biobay.com.cn/main/index.asp). Current research areas include: cell signalling; chemical biology; cancer biology; molecular microbiology; neuroscience; genomics, proteomics, virology and bioinformatics. The Department currently offers an undergraduate, master’s and PhD degree programme in both biological sciences and bioinformatics.

XJTLU is located in the Science & Education Innovation District of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), well-connected via nearby airports to cities in Europe, North America, and Asia and via high-speed rail to other major cities in China. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 companies. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP ($233 billion in 2016). The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town’s canals, UNESCO World Heritage Site gardens, and the I.M. Pei-designed Suzhou Museum attracting millions of tourists annually. SIP offers an excellent quality of life. The nearby Jinji Lake provides attractive views, by day and by night, and there are a variety of shopping centres, international and local restaurants, entertainment hubs and a great nightlife.  Suzhou is also home to four international schools for K-12 students.

The salary range for the Lecturer positions (equivalent to Assistant Professor in the US system) is 26,454 – 32,412 RMB/month and 32,904 – 38,894 RMB/month for Associate Professor I positions. In addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax “holiday” of up to three years, depending on where they have previously been domiciled and personal circumstances.

To apply: please visit our website at http://job.xjtlu.edu.cn/ to submit an online application. You should be prepared to upload your CV, the contact details for three references, and cover letter (in English) outlining your interest in the position and your teaching and research accomplishments.
Applications should be received by 31st August, 2018 (please quote reference BIO995544). Informal enquiries may be addressed to the Acting Head of the Department, Dr. Mu Wang (Email: mu.wang@xjtlu.edu.cn
