Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University emerged as a result of the widening open-door policy and convergence of globalisation in education. The rapid economic development of Suzhou and its neighbouring regions attracted the two well-known parent universities – Xi’an-Jiaotong University in China and the University of Liverpool in the UK – to establish a new international university in Dushu Lake Science and Education Innovation District, Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), initially offering degree programmes in the subject areas of science, engineering, and management. The University was the first such cooperation between two strong partner institutions. It has been approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education, and is now ranked No.1 among the nine existing institutions.
XJTLU takes the best of Chinese and British higher education, combining respect for tradition, intellectual freedom, innovation, academic quality and ethical responsibility, and creates a new experience for staff and students. XJTLU aims to supply internationally-minded graduates able to work in today’s fast-moving global economy and to provide an exciting cutting-edge research-led environment for its staff.
A unique collaborative institution, XJTLU offers both UK and Chinese accredited undergraduate degrees. Established in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The University now has 10,000 students on its campus in Suzhou Industrial Park with 17 academic departments. The language of instruction is English. A new campus at Taicang, also in Suzhou, is currently under development,. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus.
