The department of Biomedical Engineering is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for education and research with over 50 years of experience.
The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde as developed an intelligent drill and navigation system for orthopaedic surgery which will significantly improve implant positions, patient outcomes and healthcare costs. The department seeks to recruit a Research Associate to participate in a project funded by Scottish Enterprise to develop a robotic-assisted surgical planning and navigation software for an innovative robotic surgical tool.

This robotically assisted surgical technology will be designed to allow the surgeon to prepare "patient specific" and more anatomically correct bone tunnels during orthopaedic surgery. The navigation system provides real time guidance for a surgeon to allow steerable and controlled drilling pathways inside bone tissue.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline (i.e. computing or software engineering), or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with relevant experience in industrial robotic programming, computing vision, imaging processing. You will have demonstrable capability in the development of Architect and code software in an invasive medical device and is compliant with the relevant medical device standards. A high level of proficiency in one of the following programme languages are essential: Java or C/C++. You will have capability to write required technical design documentation and test protocols. 

You will have a developing ability to make specific contributions and manage tasks as part of a multi-disciplinary product development team. You will have the ability to work as part of a team, integrating with existing team members and collaborating effectively with electronics & mechanical engineers. You will be positive, strong and robust work ethic, taking pride in professionalism, responsibility and highly proactive approach to work. You will have the ability to understand and solve complex problems and concepts as well as make decisions based on given input; analytical skills include, but are not limited to applying logical thinking to gathering and analysing information, designing and testing solutions to problems, and formulating plans.

The position is fixed in one year but potential to extend to another 2 year.
