About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative academic team working in the Department of Social Work, School of Health Sciences, within the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. The Department of Social Work is one of the leaders in social work education and research in Australia. These two positions are education and research focused appointments, with the Senior Lecturer role being ideal for an emerging academic leader in this field. The appointees will be actively involved in coordinating and teaching across the MSW and potentially in other programs offered by the Department. They will also be expected to lead research in their field of specialization, one that is well aligned with the Departments core research themes.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordinating and teaching into subjects within the Master of Social Work course
  • Maintaining and developing research in areas aligned with the Departmental research priorities
  • Contributing to the Department of Social Work through participating in staff and other committee meetings, strategic planning and policy development
  • Level C - Engaging in leadership roles at departmental and/or school levels

Who We Are Looking For

Our ideal candidate is one who is eligible for Australian Association of Social Workers membership=. They would bring proven teaching experience and adaptability to deliver a range of subjects, supported by demonstrated leadership and innovation in teaching. The ideal candidate will also have an emerging national research profile aligned with departmental goals, showcasing your commitment to advancing the field. Additionally, they also possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, along with robust stakeholder management and effective organisational, planning, and project management capabilities.

You will also have:

  • a PhD in Social Work or a related discipline
  • Strong organisational, planning, and project management skills
  • Ideally, experience as a social work practitioner

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.

Your New Team – Department of Social Work, School of Health Sciences

In July 2009, Social Work became a Department within the School of Health Sciences, in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Social Work was established at The University of Melbourne in 1940 and continues to be one of the leading departments in the Asia-Pacific region.

Social Work has a significant research profile and close local and national links with key human service agencies in the government and non-government sectors, social work professional bodies and other major social work schools internationally.

Since 2008 the Social Work has been offering a qualifying Master of Social Work Degree as well as the Master of Narrative Therapy and Community Work (with the Dulwich Centre).  Social Work also has a long standing, strong and vibrant PhD program focused on training future leaders in the profession and academia.

The Department of Social Work is located within the School of Health Sciences, along with the Departments of Audiology and Speech Pathology, Nursing, Optometry & Vision Sciences, and Physiotherapy.
