About the city

University of Leeds minisite

Leeds is one of the largest cities in the UK with a population of more than 750,000. We are one of the city’s largest employers and therefore play an important role in economic and cultural diversity of the local area. Our main campus is based just 1km from the city centre, where you’ll find shops, restaurants and entertainment to suit most tastes.

Whether you’re looking for culture, history, shopping or just to wander and enjoy the city’s atmosphere, there’s a lot to experience in Leeds. We’re the home to distinguished theatres, performance venues, international sport, award-winning restaurants and a wealth of other attractions.

As Leeds is quite a compact city, it’s also really easy to get out into the countryside. There are a whole host of smaller towns and cities, like York, Harrogate, Ilkley and Skipton within easy and commutable reach, perfect if you prefer to base yourself outside the urban environment.

Leeds is based in the County of Yorkshire, and if you enjoy the outdoors Yorkshire has some of the best places in the UK to explore. If you like cycling, mountain biking, walking or exploring historic towns and attractions, we’re sure you’ll find lots to do in the region.

Centrally located, Leeds is also well connected to the rest of the UK with Manchester (1 hour by train), London (2 hours) and Edinburgh (3 hours) all within reasonably easy reach.
