Laboratory coordinator in archaeology

The laboratory coordinator in archaeology is responsible for organising laboratory operations and contributing to the instructions for fieldwork and laboratory equipment in archaeology. The coordinator will participate in preparing and conducting fieldwork and post-excavation work (including training excavations and inventories) as well as managing the archaeological resources and collections of the discipline. The position covers a fixed term from 1 August 2023 to 31 December 2024.

The duties of the laboratory coordinator include supporting archaeology teachers, researchers and students in laboratory operations and instructing on the use of research tools and archaeological laboratory practice. Also among the coordinator’s essential duties are the development of laboratory operations and collaboration with partners within and outside the University of Helsinki to increase opportunities for use of the laboratory. The appointee will acquire equipment and any additional resources required and help plan and implement extensive projects for the development of research activities and equipment.

Additionally, the appointee will be responsible for hazardous waste and vehicles, supervise the safe use of chemicals and X-ray equipment, and ensure general occupational safety in the laboratory in accordance with agreed practices and guidelines. The coordinator will also be responsible for arranging maintenance for archaeological equipment. If possible, the laboratory coordinator may participate in the discipline’s research projects by providing analyses and reports commensurate with their skills.

The appointee must hold both a second-cycle (master’s) degree in archaeology or other applicable higher education degree and a driving licence (category B). Other requirements include experience in archaeological fieldwork and post-excavation work, archaeological data processing and archaeological research methods. The role requires excellent collaboration and organisational skills and knowledge of laboratory methods (occupational safety, basic laboratory techniques, microscopy). Familiarity with other research and analysis methods (e.g., XRF, archaeological modelling and documentation methods) and experience in supervision and teaching will be considered an advantage.
What we offer
The appointee’s salary will be based on levels 7–9 of the job requirement scheme for staff in non-teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The gross annual salary will range approximately from €33,500 to €44,000. The position includes a six-month trial period.
