The School of Chemical Engineering is a multi-disciplinary and vibrant environment for outstanding study and research.  The School is internationally renowned for its pioneering research in the areas of formulation engineering, healthcare technologies and energy. A recipient of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher Education in 2011 for research excellence, the School was ranked top in the recent REF 2014 exercise for the impact of its research within industry.

The School has 37 permanent academic staff, over 50 research staff, over 150 postgraduate research students and some 660 undergraduate students. The School regularly attracts research income in excess of £10 million per year through a balanced portfolio of grants from the UK Research Councils (RCUK), the European Union and Industry. The School’s research is supported by two Centres for Doctoral Training in Formulation Engineering and in Fuel Cells and their Fuels.  We have recently been awarded substantial funds for a Faraday fast-start project, Recycling of Lithium Ion Batteries (ReLIB), funded by the ISCF Faraday Challenge Research Institute.  Through this project we are looking to strengthen our activities in sustainable processing and recycling of critical elements and materials, in strong collaboration with the Birmingham Centre for Strategic Elements and Critical Materials.

We thus seek to appoint a lecturer or senior lecturer in Chemical Engineering with a focus on sustainable processing in reflection of these exciting new developments who will contribute to the continuing growth and success of the School.  We are looking for a candidate who is able to grow activities in the areas of physical separation techniques for processing primary and secondary materials and in hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical recovery of metals from waste sources.

The successful candidate should have a first degree and a PhD, or equivalent experience relevant to the area. Our academic staff participate in and lead international quality research to bring originality and new research directions in line with the above research themes, working in collaboration with others in the College and building links with industry. They contribute to and develop the teaching in the School.  They are supported by the University’s sector leading development programmes and have access to the best financial and physical resources, a beautiful campus and an intellectually stimulating and diverse community.

Interviews will be held on 16 March 2018.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Mark Simmons, the Head of School, m.j.simmons@bham.ac.uk or to Professor Neil Rowson n.a.rowson@bham.ac.uk
