As part of this project, we seek to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Grade 6) who will be substantively involved in core osteoarchaeological aspects of our study design and data collection/analysis.

The successful applicant will have competency in Osteoarchaeology, with a PhD in Osteoarchaeology (or related field) and/or demonstrable experience in this area depending on level of appointment.

The candidate should be an experienced osteoarchaeologist and familiar with reading and synthesizing osteoarchaeological reports. Ideally, the successful candidate will have knowledge of Neolithic through Medieval period Scotland and Ireland and a working familiarity with osteoarchaeological research in this region and over this time-span. Practical experience in working with human dental and skeletal remains is essential, however, full training will be provided for the project-specific analyses. Due to the location of many of the study sites/collections, the successful candidate should be able to travel throughout Scotland and Ireland. English language competency is essential.

This postdoctoral position will have responsibility for assisting in the identification of appropriate samples and, subsequently, collection of data from identified skeletal and dental assemblages associated with Professor Oxenham’s Global professorship project. This will include organising accessing and collecting dental casts and other data for analysis with project partners and undertaking preliminary sample preparation ahead of further microscopic work. The role will include undertaking on-site visits to collaborating museum collections, and also involve the collating of an archive of primary literature and other data resources for the different study sites included in the project. The person appointed will be expected to plan and conduct work in close collaboration with the project’s Principal Investigator (Professor Marc Oxenham) and a number of external specialists and collaborators.

Salary will be paid at the rate of £33,797 per annum on Grade 6 of the University Salary Scale.

As this post is externally funded by the British Academy it is available for two years

Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 6 month probation period.
