Brief Introduction to Peiyang Forum

With an aim to promote a meeting of minds and fostering collaboration, Tianjin University (TJU) has successfully held the “Peiyang Forum for Young Scholars” for eight sessions and have invited approximately one thousand young scholars worldwide. The University recognizes that one of the key elements to be a World-Class University is in its talents, and spares no efforts to ensure that a more diversified and competent peer faculty network will be further established and strengthened. “Peiyang Scholars Program” is one of its programs towards building and achieving the First-class University project.

    Outstanding applicants, at home and abroad, shall exhibit good ideological and moral qualities with good personal characters, while holding a PhD degree from home and abroad by prestigious universities, and showing great academic potentials and brilliant achievements in related subject areas.

Job Responsibilities

  • Outstanding Young Professor

(a) Holding a high level of teaching and iconic results, the appointee should exhibit much of his abilities and experiences aligned with the talent standards with regard to excellence, high quality and surpassing performance. On the other hand, he should undertake the undergraduate and graduate lectures and other talent training as the backbone teachers, as well as carry on the subject of basic courses or professional core curriculums.

 (b) With an independent research track conforming to the development of discipline, the appointee, as academic mentor, should be able to lead his discipline to catch up or even surpass the internationally advanced level. (c) Having taken on a big role in aspects of discipline establishment, talent base establishment and recruitment, the appointee may also be able to impart his degree of expertise and wisdom into promoting to establish the deep collaborative links with those internationally famous university, as well as research institute.

II. Outstanding Young Associate Professor

(a) It is required that the appointee, in all matters related to the field of his discipline, should exhibit the superior professional experiences and achievement with regard to adherence to the teaching and lectures. As the backbone teachers in the training of talents such as undergraduate and graduate students, he would undertake the teaching work and at the same time, undertake the basic courses or the core courses.

(b) Taking years of high-performing scientific research in line with what the trend of the discipline requires, the appointee’s professional performance should be deemed prominent and also nationally and internationally acclaimed by peers.                                                                            

(c) Having taken on a big role in aspects of discipline establishment, talent base establishment and recruitment, he may also be able to impart his degree of expertise and wisdom into promoting to establish the collaborative links with those internationally famous university, as well as research institute.

III. Young Associate Professor

(a) With his research track aligned to what the development of the subject requires, it is imperative that the appointee have some academic achievements in its research fields, showing considerable academic potential.

(b) The appointee should actively engage in the tasks related to the discipline building-up, and also typically arrange his time to take part in the high-level international academic conferences and other forms of international academic exchange in this field. Moreover, he should also be able to actively take on the tech-savvy projects in relation with the national, provincial or municipal level.

IV. Postdoctoral Fellow

(a) The appointee will need to have obtained a PhD degree overseas, and also apply for and finally be selected into the National Postdoctoral International Exchange Program through the platform of Tianjin University.

(b) The appointee will need to have obtained a PhD degree at home, and also apply for and finally be selected into the National Postdoctoral Program for Innovative Talent through the platform of Tianjin University.

(c) The appointee’s job is mainly to be in terms of scientific research, with a proven track-record in line with what the school talent team, the superior discipline and the science and technology platform require.

Selected candidates from the initial examination will be invited to attend the Ninth PEIYANG Forum for Young Scholars (online) in April. All those who fail to receive notification within eight weeks could be deemed to have failed the preliminary examination.

Tianjin University
Tianjin University is a key national university under the administration of the Ministry of Education of China. Established in 1895, and formerly known as Peiyang University, it is the first modern higher education institution in China; that is also recognized worldwide for its motto of “Seeking Truth from Facts”, its ethos of “Precision in Learning and Strictness in Teaching” and its tradition of “Patriotic Dedication”.  Since the beginning, it has been included in the inaugural list of universities in the "985", and "211" Projects. Tianjin University is also listed in the country’s “Double First-Class” University Project. During the fourth round of national subjects’ evaluation, with a total of 25 first level disciplines participating in the evaluation; 14 have achieved Class A accreditation. 11 subjects are ranked in the top 1%, according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) with 3 in the top 0.1%.   The National Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin) at Tianjin University is one of the first 14 selected as “2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers” in China. 
Moreover, Tianjin University has been officially approved to build major national science and technology infrastructure, which is the large scale earthquake engineering simulation research facility. It has also been approved to build the center of advanced science in synthetic biology, which is one of the first seven frontier science centers approved by the Ministry of Education. Furthermore, the university has been approved 9 national “Discipline Innovation and Talent Recruitment Programs of Colleges and Universities”. Tianjin University’s School of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology is one of the first four schools in China to be listed in “Network in International Centers for Education in China” program.

Recognized for its impactful research, by focusing on the social and national strategic requirements, and harvesting and striving towards world science and technology advancement, there have been many achievements. There are four national key laboratories, four national engineering laboratories, one national engineering technology research centre, two national engineering research centres, three national international science and technology cooperation bases, eight key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, five engineering research centres of the Ministry of Education, 30 Tianjin key laboratories, 23 Tianjin engineering centres and 36 Tianjin International Cooperation Bases, five innovation research groups of National Natural Science Foundation of China,12 innovation teams of the Ministry of Education and one innovation team of National Defense Science and Technology.

The University is located in Tianjin city, on the shore of the Bohai Sea. Tianjin is one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government of China.
