The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers B.Eng., M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmes. The University of Hong Kong has a highly ranked engineering school and an active Mechanical Engineering Programme. The Department employs about 35 full-time faculty members and has well-equipped teaching and research facilities and support. The research environment is vibrant. Frontier research efforts are promoted and conducted in strategic areas related to this post, including but not limited to acoustics, environmental engineering, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and renewable energy. Information about the Department can be obtained at

Understanding ocean dynamics is crucial for modeling climate change, ensuring navigational safety and managing coastal hazard. Internal wave propagation, developing offshore platforms, underwater vehicles, sensors as well as measurement techniques all pose significant challenges in science and technology. Renewable energy involving waves and tides have been studied intensively. Wind farms built offshore relieve the pressure of land usage. The candidate should initiate efforts or have established credentials in one of these frontier fields.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field with an excellent research record. The appointee is expected to conduct leading research within the broad area of ocean science and engineering. They will also be responsible for delivering quality teaching in relevant subjects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in addition to the engagement in knowledge transfer activities and provision of administrative service to the University/Faculty/Department.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.

The University only accepts online application for the above post. Applicants should apply online and upload an up-to-date C.V., a research statement and a teaching statement.  Review of applications will start as soon as possible and continue until December 31, 2023 or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
