At TU Dresden, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Forest Sciences, Institute of International Forestry and Forest Products, the Chair of Tropical and International Forestry is seeking to appoint a university graduate as a 

Research Assistant (19 h/week)

starting as soon as possible for the duration of 4 months. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG).

He/She will work under the BMUB IKI project "Production-driven forest landscape restoration under REDD+ through private sector - community partnerships as Asian-regional learning exchange (FLOURISH)". Workplace is Tharandt.

Project description: The research project, funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), aims to develop partnerships between communities and the private sector to restore degraded forest landscapes in Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, and thus improving the livelihood of the rural people. Locally adapted business models between smallholders and the private sector are investigated and supported by NGOs, local governments and universities. Research is planned in the broad framework of the climate policy of "Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation" (REDD +). The position provides the opportunity to gain experiences in practice-oriented research in context of an international project.

Tasks: The research assistant will support the FLOURISH research coordinator at TUD in the implementation of a study concerned with the transformation of the Lao wood industry resulting from policy changes for timber value chain and industry upgrading. The core tasks of the research assistant encompass literature reviews, the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from field surveys, and the co-writing of reports and other communication materials for result dissemination.    

Requirements: Applicants should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in forestry, economics, geography, development studies or other disciplines related to the project. Written and oral proficiency in English is required. Experience in quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and/or skills in spatial data processing and map design are of advantage.
