At TU Dresden, Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Power Engineering, the Chair of Imaging Techniques in Energy and Process Engineering offers, subject to resources being available, a position as 

Research Associate / PhD Student
in the field of muon detector development
(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting 01.04.2020. The position is limited until 31.03.2023. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz-WissZeitVG). The position offers the chance to obtain further academic qualification (e.g. PhD). Balancing family and career is an important issue. The post is basically suitable for candidates seeking part-time employment.  

Tasks: Development of large-area detectors for cosmic muons. In more detail, the following objectives should be pursued: 

  • comparative analysis of different concepts for drift chamber detectors
  • development of new compact and robust detector designs
  • simulation of radiation interaction and charge transport in detectors
  • development of dedicated multi-channel data processing electronics
  • assembly and test of detectors and conduction of experiments 

Requirements: very good university degree (diploma, master degree) preferably in physics or electronics engineering; knowledge of radiation detector technology as well as particle transport simulations is beneficial.
