At TU Dresden, the Institute of Groundwater Management at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department of Hydro Sciences seeks to fill the position of

Chair (W3) in Groundwater Systems

from 1st of October 2020.

The successful candidate will represent the field of groundwater and its quantitative and qualitative aspects on local, regional as well as global scales in research and teaching. This includes the analysis and modelling of water, energy and material flows in porous and fractured aquifers as well as addressing problems of groundwater resources. It requires the combination of modern methods in exploration, analysis and prognosis on laboratory as well as field scale with innovative modelling approaches to deal with current problems of groundwater management, e.g. to link analysis of stable isotopes, geochemical and soil physical analyses with novel concepts of transport and (inverse) flow modelling. The teaching includes courses in the university’s bachelor and master programs on fundamentals in hydrogeology of groundwater systems to undergraduate and graduate students. The active participation in further development of teaching and studies within the Faculty of Environmental Science is expected including the international master programmes “Hydro Science and Engineering“ and “GroundwatCh“, both taught in English language. In addition, contributions to international postgraduate UNEP-courses offered by CIPSEM (Centre for International Postgraduate Studies of Environmental Management) are required. The duties also include participation within the selfadministration and in the academic committees of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

The applicant must have a broad experience and a profound knowledge of porous and fractured aquifers including exploration methods, measurement and analytical methods, stochastic flow modelling, description of (reactive) transport processes and must be able to resolve complex problems in groundwater management. A willingness to conduct collaborative environmental research is expected which explicitly includes water-related problems in natural and anthropogenic systems. Special attention will be paid to the capability for interdisciplinary co-operation, which is of outstanding significance for the joint research in the Center for Advanced Water Research (CAWR) - a co-operation between the water sectors at TU Dresden and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). As well, the holder of the position shall co-operate on topics related to integrated water resources management with the Dresden-based Institute UNU-FLORES of the United Nations University. The candidate is required to have substantial experience in research and teaching and to have a proven record of first-class publications in one or several of the mentioned fields. Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding and project management and leadership are expected. The skills for conducting lectures in the English language are required. The responsibilities also include contribution to the joint cooperation with partners in science, development cooperation, private sector and politics and active development of corresponding projects in the future. Applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 58 of the Act on the Autonomy of Institutions of Higher Education in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSFG).
