Shantou University (STU), a key comprehensive university in Guangdong Province, was founded in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. It is jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The University campus is located in the northwestern part of Shantou, a seaside city, covering a total area of 1.3 square kilometers with a floor space of 564,800 m2.

The University consists of 8 colleges and schools, namely, College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Engineering, Medical College, Law School, Business School, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, and Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication. It enrolls qualified students from all over the country (including the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan). Additionally, STU has a Graduate School and a School of Continuing Education. Currently, STU has a staff of 1,602 and over 10,294 students and has nurtured nearly 100,000 graduates.

In September 2013,the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University signed a Memorandum of Understanding for jointly establishing Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), an institution of higher learning in Shantou. On April 9th 2015, the Ministry of Education approved the preparation for the establishment of GTIIT. On December 16th, the inaugural ceremony of GTIIT was held.

In 2015, STU was named as one of high-level universities in Guangdong Province, and in the same year, the institution placed in the 601-800 category in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In 2016 and 2017, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings placed Shantou University in 601-800 in the world and 161-170 in Asia.

Mathematics, Optics and Optical engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Marine Biology.

College of Engineering:

Construction Management, Environmental Engineering (especially Advanced Water/Wastewater Engineering, Environmental Biotechnology, Air Pollution Engineering, Road and Bridge/Geotechnical Engineering), Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Electronic Information Engineering, Communication Engineering, Electronic Design and Image Processing, Software Engineering, Computer Systems Architecture, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Network Security.

Business School:

Business Management, Information Management, Data Analysis and Operations Management, Account, Financial Management, Marketing, International Economics & Trade, Economy, Finance.

Law School:

Civil and Commercial Law, Economic Law, Procedural Law(including Civil Procedural Law, Criminal Procedural Law, Administrative Procedural Law), Legal Theory(Legal language & Legal logistics), Law on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Management, Public Administration (Human Resource Management, E-government, Public Economics). (Teach Bilingually in both Chinese and English Languages)

Cheung Kong School of Art and Design:

Interactive Design, Design Theories (Planning and Management of Creative Industry), Moving Image Design, Product Design, Environmental Art Design (Interior Design). ( Teach Bilingually in both Chinese and English Languages)

Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication:

Broadcasting, Journalism and Advertising.

Center for Faculty Development and Education Audit:

Cognitive Psychology, Researchers and Trainers in Epistemic Psychology, Learning Science and Pedagogies. (Teach Bilingually in both Chinese and English Languages)

Medical College:

Medicine, Biology and other related major
