Northumbria University, Newcastle is a research-rich, business-focussed, professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence.

Located in Newcastle upon Tyne, and with a campus in the heart of London’s financial district, Northumbria University is located in the UK’s best two cities for students. At Northumbria we are global in our scope and reach, with operations in London, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Singapore, and we remain the largest English provider in Hong Kong. The University continues its strong commitment to internationalism, including its valuable and long-standing links with Europe.

Yorkshire Cancer Research has funded an exciting new project to help women treated for breast cancer to achieve and maintain weight loss to reduce their future risk of disease recurrence. The North of England Women's Diet and ActivitY After Breast Cancer Trial (NEW DAY- ABC) is being led by Northumbria University and Sheffield Hallam University. The main focus will be on co-designing an intervention (with participants) that will provide tailored dietary advice and exercise prescription and support long-term behaviour change. We are looking to recruit a researcher to co-ordinate the day to day operations in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

The appointed person will work in the well-appointed laboratories of the Department of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation at our Newcastle City Campus, in collaboration with clinical collaborators at the local NHS Hospital Trusts. Applicants should have some expertise and experience of physical activity and/or dietary behaviour change interventions in clinical populations for weight management or health improvement. This post requires a sound appreciation of the challenges associated with lifestyle behaviour modification and empathy for supporting individuals with a clinical condition to change their lifestyle behaviour. A key aspect of the role will be to work with women treated for breast cancer to co-design the research intervention. If you have experience of working in the field of weight management or exercise oncology, or you have transferable expertise gained from involvement in lifestyle interventions with other populations, we encourage you to apply. The role will require extensive liaison with women treated for breast cancer, clinicians, health professionals and research collaborators.

We wish to appoint an excellent researcher with well-developed analytical and communication skills who has the ability to work as an integral and co-operative member of our research group. Attention to detail in preparing reports and other materials for progress meetings and in the presentation of study findings is an essential prerequisite. You should be a confident communicator and be capable of conversing effectively with a range of stakeholders. We are looking for someone who is passionate about and skilled in helping others to achieve their health ambitions. You will have a PhD in an exercise science or a related science discipline.
