Northumbria University is seeking to appoint two lecturers or senior lecturers in the history and/or the performance of western art music, from 1500 to the present, to work within the Department of Humanities. These appointments follow the appointment of Northumbria’s first Professor of Music History who will be working with the Head of Humanities to establish a programme of academic music based on high-quality research, a distinctive curriculum and partnership and outreach working within the region. 

Our vision for music at Northumbria is to develop a distinctive programme that draws on a core of music history and performance and strands in music and society, music pedagogy and music and management. At this stage of the project, we seek to appoint specialists in music and performance and/or music history. While the fields are open to specialists in a range of different areas of western art music, we would especially welcome applicants who understand how musicians have to work in the modern world. Applications are welcome from scholars with excellent records of research and teaching in any of these three areas.

In the first year of their appointment, the appointees will work with the Professor of Music History, the campus Music Director and the Head of Humanities to develop a Foundation Year in music, to be introduced in 2019, and future undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The appointees will have the experience and enterprise to work as a team in establishing partnerships, developing a distinctive curriculum, and setting out ambitious research agendas for the music group within Humanities.
 
The Department of Humanities develops innovative interdisciplinary work through the Institute for Humanities, which brings together the disciplines of American Studies, English Literature, English Language, Creative Writing and History, and the appointee will join a large and vibrant research-active group of scholars working across these disciplines. Essential to this appointment are partnerships which Northumbria is establishing with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, the UK’s only fulltime professional chamber orchestra, based at Sage Gateshead; Newcastle Cathedral; Samling Academy, a unique programme for young classical singers in the North-East, and other organizations. The appointees will have an excellent record of teaching, and publications in the fields of performance, music history and/or music and society, with a strong potential submission for REF 2021. They will have experience of communicating with different audiences outside academia, and of building links with other disciplines such as American Studies, English Literature, History or Creative Writing.
