ABOUT THE ROLE

Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator on the Measuring Engagement in Advanced Dementia (MEAD) project. This exciting project is funded by the Alzheimer’s Association to develop a new measure of engagement for individuals with advanced dementia who can no longer speak. The Research Fellow will be responsible for the day-to-day activity in the project, working closely with external partners. 

Key activities will include engaging with providers of care for people living with advanced dementia who can no longer speak. The project will also work closely with local clinical and social care teams to create a new approach to engagement that is usable in practice. The Research Fellow will be responsible for preparing an application for ethical approval and recruiting the participants, in accordance with the Mental Capacity Act (2005). The Fellow will also lead on data collection and analysis at all stages of the project, including video-recording and coding, quantitative and qualitative analysis. Writing up the results for publication and presenting at conferences are also expected. Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate student projects and volunteers is also possible for candidates wishing to increase their experience.

ABOUT THE TEAM

This Research Project is being delivered within the Psychology Department, which contains a vibrant group of staff, researchers and PhD students. Northumbria’s research in Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience is ranked 15th in the UK for research power out of 93 submissions, a rise of 28 places from 43rd in 2014 REF. This underscores the University’s commitment to delivering world-leading research with real-world impact.

The MEAD project is led by Professor Arlene Astell, an international leader in innovation for dementia, newly arrived at Northumbria University. The Research Fellow will become a key member of the Dementia Ageing Technology Engagement (DATE) lab and play an important role in the lab’s development. The project involves close collaboration with people living with dementia, care providers, clinicians and families of those living with dementia. The new engagement measure will be iteratively developed with these partners, to explore new ideas about what works in practice. 

ABOUT YOU

We are seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join this exciting project funded by the Alzheimer's Association Applicants should hold a PhD in psychology or communication sciences or an allied subject. Alternatively, an experienced Speech and Language Therapist, interested in pursuing research would also be considered (with appropriate training provided). Most important is an understanding of human communication, both verbal and nonverbal, and the ways in which humans interact. Familiarity and enthusiasm for mixed methods research is also important. Flexibility and experience in iterative approaches is also welcomed.
