We are a progressive, dynamic and innovative institution with genuine global ambition.
When you join Northumbria University, Newcastle, be prepared to be part of a research-rich, business focussed and professional university with a global reputation for academic excellence. Universities thrive when they attract the world's brightest minds to push the boundaries of understanding.
Northumbria’s ability to do so gives a vibrancy to working that permeates through everything the organisation does through our work to create and apply knowledge that transforms lives and makes a powerful cultural and economic impact.
Located in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, and with a base in London, Northumbria is one of the largest universities in the UK attracting more than 33,000 students from 135 countries. International activity is an essential and extensive part of Northumbria University. We are committed to partnership working with prestigious institutions around the world that provide opportunities for academic and student exchange, research links and collaborations. This is evidenced through our four overseas offices and strong links with China, Grenada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, as well as new campus developments in Jakarta and London.
The University has seen an increase in both the volume and quality of student applicants in recent years, which is testament to our growing reputation and standing in the league tables. We are investing in new technologies and processes to enhance our teaching and learning activities and transform the student experience. This work has led to our student satisfaction rating now at 88% in the National Student Survey, placing us well ahead of the sector average.
The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) demonstrated that the University has made a major step forward in research, reporting the largest rise in the UK in research rated as world-leading and internationally excellent. Northumbria has nearly tripled its share of research rated in these categories and is now ranked in the UK top 50 for research power, resulting in the fourth largest increase in quality research funding in the country.
As a business-focussed university, more than 560 employers sponsor our students and almost 50 professional bodies accredit our courses. This real-world emphasis throughout our courses has helped to place the University 7th in the UK for the number of graduates in professional employment on permanent contracts. The entrepreneurial spirit continues through our alumni, with Northumbria ranked as the number one university in the UK for graduate start-up businesses. Thanks to our support, more than 100 graduate companies have been launched since 2009 that employ almost 950 staff and have a combined turnover of £62 million.
If – like us – you never stand still and constantly search for ways to challenge and innovate, then you’ll find support, encouragement and opportunity here at Northumbria. What are you waiting for?
