The School of Contemporary Music (SoCM) in the Faculty of Performing Arts, is Singapore and Southeast Asia’s leading music school dedicated to developing thoughtful, reflective and virtuosic music talents in contemporary expressions of music. SoCM offers Diplomas in Music and Audio Production and a BA (Hons) Music programme with specialisms in jazz, popular music, contemporary classical and electronic music. The School is known for its experimental and interdisciplinary approach and to hallmark this, the College is building a unique recital hall dedicated to contemporary and electronic music, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia and Singapore.

SoCM seeks to appoint a dynamic and energetic full-time lecturer in music to teach and coordinate music contextual studies at diploma and degree levels.

Reporting to the Head of School, you will coordinate and oversee the content and delivery of contextual studies across the three programmes, support students in their BA (Hons) thesis preparation and foster a culture of critical inquiry into contemporary music. Key responsibilities include academic preparation, teaching and delivery, and working collaboratively with other music faculty staff to enhance School plans. Administrative tasks include coordination of School events with faculty staff, curriculum and repertoire review, timetabling, music resource development and management. You will also implement research/professional practices to share and extend knowledge for the benefit of the programme and the students.

The ideal candidate, besides a strong background in music contextual studies, would have a strong performance practice in one of the specialisms offered by the School but more critically the ability to connect contextual studies with practice. SoCM welcomes applicants with interests in nurturing emerging musicians to find their own performance style and voice.  We particularly encourage applications from individuals with a developing or established professional and/or research profile. Applicants with strong experience with practice will be provided with opportunity to teach performance and repertoire.


  • PhD or DMA in music or contemporary music studies.
  • At least 5 years of full-time tertiary-level teaching experience and at least 5 years of relevant professional experience or industry experience.
  • Good working knowledge of music education at tertiary level including curriculum development, design, teaching, learning methodologies, and assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Passion for teaching with the ability to nurture and encourage excellence in student learning.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and team working skills as well as academic administration skills.
  • Research active with a personal research profile.
