Senior Lecturer/Reader in International Relations

Job description 

The Department of War Studies wishes to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Reader in International Relations to join a thriving community of researchers and educators with a high profile also for impact and public engagement.

The successful candidate will have a track record of high-quality publications, research funding and innovative teaching in the field of International Relations. The Department is open to applications from all research areas within International Relations, broadly defined. The Department has a number of IR staff, with particular research focus on security, technology, violence, ethics, gender, migration and borders. We are a theoretically and methodologically diverse Department, including key strength in critical approaches and methodologies. We welcome applications from candidates whose research contributes to or expands these research areas from a range of perspectives.

The postholder will contribute to the delivery of teaching in the Department of War Studies at the BA and MA level. Applications from candidates with the ability to teach in the areas of international relations theory, global governance, and critical security studies are particularly welcome. In addition, applicants must have experience in supervising doctoral research students.

The postholder will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required. Finally, the person sought must have a proven ability to initiate and lead research projects, together with a commitment to launching new ones.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.

Key responsibilities

• Take responsibility for the planning, organisation and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the Department
• Develop and use a variety of methods to assess student learning and provide feedback that is timely, relevant and appropriate
• Undertake high-quality research in the subject area, publish the findings in highly-rated internationally recognised journals, and participate in the major internationally recognised academic networks
• Sustain high-quality research activity through a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects and secure the funding required for this research as required
• Supervise postgraduate research students and/or research staff
• Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Senior Tutor and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support problems
• Attend meetings and conferences to share and present research findings, which creates a professional network and enhances the national and international standing of the Department
• To engage in professional development as appropriate to update skills, and to support teaching excellence
• Carry out administration as requested by the Head of Department
• Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

1. PhD awarded in International Relations or another a relevant subject
2. Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students
3. Experience of supervising doctoral students to completion
4. Experience of innovative curriculum and teaching design
5. Track record of research leadership, including successful funding applications for collaborative research grants, and evidence of research impact
6. Strong track record of high-quality publications
7. Experience of interacting with a wide variety of non-academic stakeholders
8. Established communication skills, both oral and written
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
10. Commitment to contributing to diversity and inclusion efforts

For appointment at the grade of Reader, candidates must also show

1. Evidence of an internationally recognised research agenda, with an outstanding track record of research, academic publications and grant-making
2. Evidence of academic leadership and experience in senior administrative roles
3. An extensive record of teaching innovation and delivery

Desirable criteria

1. Evidence of establishing links with relevant external bodies
2. Experience of mentoring departmental colleagues

Depending on your experience, you may be appointed at a Senior Lecturer or Reader grade, the salaries for this are detailed below:

Senior Lecturer: £60,048 - £67,059 per annum, including London weighting allowance. Reader: £61,723 - £67,059 per annum, including London weighting allowance.
