The King’s Maudsley Partnership for Children and Young People will transform mental health care for children and young people through a unique collaboration between specialist clinicians from the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London’s leading academics. The Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People is a £70m purpose-built centre that will be the new home of the King’s Maudsley Partnership, including many National and Specialist CAMHS services and the Maudsley and Bethlem Hospital School. South London and Maudsley is the UK’s largest NHS provider of specialist CAMHS services and the IoPPN is home to the leading child and adolescent mental health research team in Europe. This ground-breaking Centre will therefore transform our understanding and treatment of young people’s mental health, driving clinical and research excellence to improve outcomes through integration and co-location of leading researchers and clinicians.

The new building housing the Centre is due to open in January 2024 and so we are looking to appoint a Professor and Director to lead world-class research in this space. The Director will be responsible for facilitating a collaborative approach to addressing pressing challenges such as prevention strategies at a population level and improved identification of those at risk of developing mental health problems. Equally, demonstrate a commitment to targeted early interventions, enabling effective and cost-effective care and considering new interventions for the most severe and treatment-resistant conditions. The Director will therefore take an active role in developing the partnership between academics, the Clinical Academic Group leadership and South London and Maudsley, with the aim of greatly reducing the time it takes to bring new treatments to patients. This unique collaboration will create innovations and find breakthroughs that will help more patients at a time when need has never been greater.

To achieve this, the successful candidate will bring personal research leadership and will have the ability to build and grow world-class research teams that work synergistically with clinicians. A core responsibility of the role is to create and implement a vision for how the combined clinical and research capability of the centre can benefit local, national, and international populations, alongside driving the delivery of benefits realisation. The Director will bring the skills required to develop a culture of exceptional innovation and clinical connectivity.

To ensure the strategic effectiveness of this role, the Director may also become the Head of Department for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry within the IoPPN. We are therefore looking for an exceptional communicator with interests in management and leadership, in influencing policy, and in delivering valuable and measurable benefits for research and patient care.
